Four Years Post Dobbs: Abortion Restrictions and Health Care Cuts Threaten Over 12 Million Latinas

In a new joint report, the National Partnership for Women & Families and the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice reveal the harmful impact of abortion restrictions on Latinas four years after Dobbs.

Abortion Restrictions and Health Care Cuts Threaten Over 12 Million Latinas: Four Years After Dobbs, Latinas Remain the Largest Group of Women of Color Harmed by Bans in the United States

Read the new analysis here

  • 6.4 Million Latinas are the largest group (6.4 million) of women of color living in states where abortion is banned.
  • 36% of Latinas live in states that have restricted medication abortion, including limits on telehealth, mailed abortion pills, and pharmacy access. Medication abortion is especially important for Latinas because it can reduce travel costs, childcare needs, lost wages, and exposure to immigration enforcement.

This new analysis shows how Latinas are disproportionately harmed by post-Dobbs abortion restrictions where they remain the largest group (6.4 million) of women of color living in states where abortion is banned.  The analysis touches on the impacts of reproductive health clinic closures, expansion of Anti Abortion Centers, attacks on medication abortion, and immigration and health coverage policies.  Latinas are being impacted by a number of federal policies, particularly the Medicaid funding restrictions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), that have contributed to clinic closures nationwide.

Many Latinas, especially immigrants, face layered barriers including lack of insurance, Medicaid restrictions, and immigration-related fears. These factors can discourage women from seeking health care and make it more difficult to obtain reproductive health services.

Congress must reverse the damaging cuts to Medicaid and other safety net programs – cuts that have been weaponized to fund a violent immigrant detention, deportation, and disappearance campaign. Congress must also pass the Health Equity and Access Under the Law for Immigrant Families Act (HEAL), removing all immigration status barriers to accessing public and affordable health coverage, and lift the restrictions on abortion coverage in public health insurance programs by passing the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance Act (EACH).  We invite you to get involved. Contact your legislators to support with EACH Act and HEAL Act.

Latinas deserve to live in communities free from fear and state-sanctioned violence – including anti-immigrant policies and abortion bans and restrictions – where they have full autonomy over their bodies and the resources to access comprehensive reproductive health care. Now more than ever, we need lawmakers to fund care and invest in the safety and dignity of all.
