Attending the Green Wave Convening in Mexico City was an incredibly enriching experience. The opportunity to learn from and exchange stories with activists from across the Americas provided invaluable insights and support. This gathering reinforced the importance of community and persistence in organizing and advocacy work, especially in the face of challenging circumstances.
Connecting with activists from countries like El Salvador highlighted the stark differences in the fight for abortion access. In these regions, activists risk their lives and futures not only to access abortion care but also to assist others. This bravery stands in contrast to the climate in the United States, where fear of legal repercussions often hinders activism. The lessons from these global comrades underscored the necessity of community-driven solutions and the power of grassroots movements.
One of the most striking revelations was how activists across Latin America navigate their struggles without relying on governmental support. They have created robust networks for accompaniment, medication resources, and transportation, alongside educational resources and infographics to aid their communities. By engaging with international bodies like the Human Rights Council, these activists bypass their own governments to seek justice and enact change. Their unwavering commitment to creating access systems for themselves is both inspiring and instructive.
Hearing the stories of rising autocrats in countries like El Salvador and Argentina provided a poignant reminder of the challenges faced in the U.S., especially in the pre-election season. The parallels between their struggles highlighted the global nature of the fight against fascism. Sharing best practices and personal stories with these activists helped us find solidarity and strength in our own battles.
A highlight of the convening was a workshop on self-care, emphasizing the use of herbal medicines, self-care practices, and the importance of taking time off. Activism is incredibly demanding and can be debilitating. To remain effective and committed, it is crucial to take care of ourselves. Natural solutions like essential oils and incense can help address the mental and physical toll of this work. The workshop provided a cathartic space to unwind, reflect on our roles and emotions, and learn how to prioritize our well-being.
The Green Wave Convening was a powerful reminder of the importance of global solidarity in our work. The courage and resilience of activists worldwide inspire us to continue our fight with renewed vigor. By embracing self-care and community-driven solutions, we can sustain our efforts and push for the change we seek. Together, we are stronger and more equipped to face the challenges ahead.
