Empowering Moments and Advocacy Highlights: NY March Recap

March has been a month of empowerment, advocacy, and meaningful connections for the Latina Institute New York. Here are some of the significant events and achievements that have unfolded over the past few weeks:

  • Language Access in Reproductive Justice: On March 6th, Alia, a NY Field Organizer, led an RJ 101 session for the New York Healthy Nail Salon Coalition. This coalition, predominantly consisting of AAPI and Latina nail salon workers, aims to enhance safety and equity within the industry. Notably, the RJ 101 session was translated into four languages—Khmer, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Spanish—a testament to the commitment to language access and justice in the reproductive justice movement.
  • Panel Participation at SOMOS New York Conference: Elizabeth, the NY State Manager, took part in a panel discussion at the SOMOS New York Conference on March 9th. Hosted by Assembly Members Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas and Harvey Epstein, the panel focused on “Expanding Access to Abortion and Training Post-Roe,” shedding light on crucial issues surrounding reproductive rights and access to healthcare.
  • National Abortion Provider Appreciation Day: March 13th marked National Abortion Provider Appreciation Day, and the NY team took the opportunity to express gratitude to staff and providers at two independent abortion clinics in the Bronx and Queens. The visits to Dr. Emily’s Women Health Center and Choices Women’s Medical were a way to acknowledge the invaluable work they do in providing essential abortion care to the community.

Highlighting Activists:

One of the standout activists in the spotlight is Fabilisa, a member of the New York Leadership Circle (LC). Fabilisa, a Bronx native currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree at City College, joined the LC in 2023 after being inspired by the @reProsFB Podcast discussion on the impact of the Dobb’s decision on Latinas. Her journey into activism reflects the importance of finding one’s voice and actively participating in movements for reproductive justice.

Upcoming Events:

Looking ahead, there are exciting events lined up:

  • IG LIVE Session on Emergency Contraception: Join the Latina Institute’s IG LIVE session (@LatinaInstitute) featuring Poderosa Advanced Practice Clinician, Cathy on March 25th. Get the latest “chisme” on emergency contraception and participate by submitting your questions.

From in-clinic procedures to self-managed abortion care, this session, facilitated by an advanced practice clinician, doula, and herbalist, promises to provide valuable insights.
