A Reflection from Lupe M. Rodríguez, Latina Institute's Executive Director

Dear Latina Institute Friends,

As I complete my first week at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, I want to share a little bit about myself with you and how elated I am to step into this role and begin my tenure as Executive Director.

Reflecting on this moment, I am filled with emotion and gratitude. I have devoted my life to working for reproductive rights, health, and justice for over 14 years, and I feel that I have found my home in these movements at Latina Institute.

As an im/migrant from Mexico who experienced, firsthand, the effects of systemic racist and capitalist oppression, I learned early on that speaking up and fighting back were imperative for my family and our community. I saw early on that those who are in the fight, who are most affected by injustice, are the only ones who can truly lead the way to achieve justice. I have dedicated my life to ensuring that the voices and experiences of those most impacted are heard, counted, and never forgotten.

In just the short time that I have been in this Executive Director chair, I have felt the warm welcome of the entire community of Latina Institute supporters. In my team I have witnessed the tenacity, commitment, and brilliance they bring to achieving justice for our communities, and I am thrilled to be their new leader and partner in this work.

Our community of supporters, you, who have been here for Latina Institute, have held us through growth and significant change as an organization, none greater than in this past year that was extraordinary in ways we could have never imagined.

The incredible challenges and pain our communities faced were mirrored inside our organization as staff suffered loss, trauma, and illness from the unimaginable impact of a devastating pandemic, economic collapse, a crescendo of state violence and uprisings for racial justice, and a failed insurrection led by white nationalists, and yet we came together through this time, and you remained steadfast with us. I am grateful for your commitment to our work, our team, and our communities.

As I take the helm of Latina Institute for this next phase of our history, I want to thank the leaders who came before me for what they have created and paved so I can help carve new pathways for the growth of our movement.

I look forward to meeting you, connecting, and sharing more in the coming weeks and months about my story, my vision for change, and what I hope to bring to Latina Institute and our movement for reproductive justice. I’m honored to join this powerful team, and I can’t wait to start working with you to make reproductive justice a reality.

With gratitude and excitement,

Lupe M. Rodriguez
