Washington, D.C. — Today, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan announced his intentions to add language that would defund Planned Parenthood to a reconciliation bill that would also repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA.) In 2014 alone, 23 percent of Planned Parenthood patients were Latinxs—meaning that the move would eliminate access to quality healthcare for over half a million people in our community.

Ann Marie Benitez, senior director of government relations for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) issued the following statement:

“Defunding Planned Parenthood would threaten to unravel the reproductive health safety net that millions of Latinxs, mothers, sisters, low-income people and others rely on for quality, affordable and trusted healthcare. Speaker Ryan, Vice President-elect Pence, and their anti-choice colleagues are putting our lives in danger with this move—especially for those who are most often denied care. All people regardless of where they live, how much they make or their immigration status have a right to affordable, quality healthcare which is exactly what Planned Parenthood provides for millions of people.”
