Healthy People 2020 Includes LGBT Health, Social Determinants of Health, Other Brand-New Topic Areas

Breaking News

The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health applauds the inclusion of a new topic area on LGBT Health into Healthy People 2020.  At the start of each decade, Healthy People is developed to provide a blueprint for the United States’ public health priorities and goals for the next ten years.  While some objectives on LGBT health had been included in the previous version of Healthy People (2010), the inclusion of LGBT health as topic area unto its own represents a major win for LGBT health advocates nationwide.   Healthy People 2020 also includes a new topic area on Social Determinants of Health, which takes into account the options and resources available in certain communities, the quality of their education and environment, and the safety of their workplaces.  The broadening scope of Healthy People reflects the work being done by advocates, such as NLIRH’s efforts to ensure that the concerns of LGBTQ Latin@s are represented in the health care reform implementation process, and our activists’ work on the ground to improve access to health care in their communities by demanding public transportation in migrant farm worker colonias.  These new topic areas, along with the new Adolescent Health topic area, are important factors in the health of Latinas, and their inclusion in 2020 represents a step forward in the direction of reproductive justice.
